Conservation of Natural Resources

Koneru along with Govindraja Swamy temple are the main components contributing to the image of the core area as a sacred place. Koneru does not have adequate water in it. The storm water that flows into it brings with it pollution due to garbage and sewage. The traditional storm water drainage systems appear to have been disturbed by urbanisation due to which the tank does not have any perennial source of supply of water. Also, the ground water levels have been disturbed due to lack of water in Koneru and due to over exploitation of ground water from the numerous hotels, restaurants, shops and residences in the area.

The water in Koneru does not meet the water quality requirements for bathing. During festive days (Teppotsavam), once every year, Koneru is filled with ground water and water from tankers. The traditional drainage system that brought water into Koneru appears to have been destroyed due to urbanisation.

For restoring water inflow into Koneru, under the EcoCity Project, the following three possibilities had been explored:

  • Bringing water from upstream water tank (Narasimha Theertha) that has high overflows during rainy season
  • Bringing in water from municipal water supply line
  • Bringing in water after treatment from water harvesting in the area
Fresh water has been brought to Koneru by connecting it through pipeline to Narasimha Theertha tank under the ecocity programme.
