Demonstration of appropriate technologies to maximize
the recycling and reuse of selected streams (wet and dry) of waste
a) Vermin composting
Friends of
Vrindavan, has established multiple vermin compost sheds on one acre of land
containing a total of 100 beds with an average bed size of 6x3x2ft. The
organization has to input 1ton/day of segregated wet waste into these pits for
an output of 300kgs/day of composted waste. This vermin-compost is packed in 1
and 50kg bags which sold to nurseries, hotels, farms locally and even retailed
in Delhi & Agra. The selling price for Ordinary Vermin Compost is Rs. 3/kg and
that of High grade Vermin compost mixed with cow urine pesticide & bone ash is
Rs. 10 per kg for a bag of 50kg. The NGO has formed 4 partnerships and opened
one enterprise named Kalindi for marketing of this manure. This activity
provides employment to 5 workers.
Vermi Compost Units -
M/s Food for life & M/s Friends of Vrindavan; End Product
Food for Life,
Vrindavan, has established one long vermin compost sheds on 2500sq. ft of land
containing a total of 45 beds with an average bed size of 8x2.6x1.5ft. The
organization has an output of 70kgs/day of composted waste. This vermin-compost
is packed in 1kg plastic bags and 25kg reused cement bags and is either sold to
villagers or used for self consumption in the organic produce of the NGO. The
selling price for Ordinary Vermin Compost is Rs. 3/kg.The NGO has formed 1
partnership and opened 1 enterprise for marketing of this manure as well as the
organic vegetables that are produced by them. This activity provides employment
to 2 workers.
b)
Manufacture
of Baskets from waste plastic, pesticide from cow urine, tulsi powder and
marigold seeds from used garlands in the temples.
Friends of
Vrindavan, manufactures several items from the dry waste collected like baskets,
pesticide from cow urine, tulsi powder and marigold seeds from used garlands
collected from the temples.

Baskets are made by
women from Straw, re-usable plastic and thread from cement bags. The NGO buys
these products from the women and sell/export them. On an average each women
earns Rs.15-20/hour and manages to make a small basket in 6 hours. This activity
provides livelihood to 10 women.
All the other
activities have also brought economic benefit to the Organisation but there is
still a need to bridge the gap between the income and expenditure and other
avenues for waste utilization need to be explored.
