Conservation/Rejuvenation of Natural Resources

Markendeya tank is one of the five religious tanks (Pancha Tirthas) in Puri. Markendeya tank is closely associated with the rituals of the Shri Jagannath temple. The tank today has diminished fresh water inflow due to disturbances in the natural drainage connecting the tank. The water quality in the tank is poor. The water in the tank gets polluted due to bathing activity, usage of oils, soaps, detergents, throwing of ritualistic materials viz. rice, grains, flowers etc., defecation in and around the tank.

The proposal is in initial stages and includes:

Reviving the drainage system in the area to re-establish fresh water inflow to Markendeya tank and other tanks in Puri
Reviving water outlet to Markendeya tank
De-siltation in the tank
Repair work of the tank structure
Improvement around the tank including landscaping
