Puri

An “EcoCity Development Plan” has been prepared for the identified project area though the GTZ Consultants (School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi). A number of project interventions, such as the following, are proposed for implementation:

  • Rejuvenation of Markendeya Tank
  • Repair/Improvement storm water drainage around Lord Jagannath Temple
  • Repair/renovation of public toilets
  • Repair / renovation of drinking water facility
  • Development of Eco Automobile Park

The above projects are at various stages of planning and designing.

The city of Puri is known for Lord Jagannath Temple from the 12th century AD and is visited by million of pilgrims and tourists every year. The project in Puri concentrates on the areas surrounding Lord Jagannath Temple, Grand Road, the religious tanks and commercial and old residential areas near the temple. At the start of the Ecocity Project, Puri had a number of problems related to environmental quality, water bodies, traffic & transportation, sewerage & drainage and solid waste management.

The main results expected to be achieved from the EcoCity Project are:

  • Improved environmental quality
  • Improved traditional water bodies
  • Improved sanitary conditions including efficient solid waste management and drainage system
  • Improved amenities for tourists/pilgrims
  • Improved traffic & transportation system including pilgrim/tourist friendly routes
