Conservation of Natural Resources - Rejuvenation of Mundar River
The Mundar River, a tributary of Meenachil River, is about 1 km long with an average width of 30 m. It runs along the north western part of the Kottayam town. The river is plagued with the problems of eutriphication, weed-proliferation, and siltation leading to its ecological succession from a river to a marshy land. Due to stagnant and polluted water, water borne diseases are frequent in the neighbouring residential areas.
The proposal includes:
- Removal of weeds and de-siltation
- Wastewater/sewerage treatment
- Landscaping, aquaculture, recreational facilities
The de-siltation work had started by the end of May 2005. The implementation of the project is in progress.
