Conservation of Natural Resources - Renovation of Kacherikadavu Boat Jetty Canal
The Kacherikadavu boat jetty was inaugurated in 1888, during the rule of the erstwhile kings of Travancore. It is located in the centre of Kottayam town. It was the centre for all the trade activities and a cheap means of transportation for passengers and goods. It is currently unused due to siltation and weeding. The canal is in septic condition and is a breeding place of mosquitoes, rats and snakes posing severe health risks to the neighbouring residential areas.
The proposal includes:
- Removal of weeds and de-siltation
- Wastewater/sewerage treatment
- Repair of the jetty structures
The de-siltation work had started by the end of May 2005. The implementation of the project is in progress. The GTZ consultants provided inputs on the management of the waste water entering the canal and the Kottayam Municipality is in discussion with stakeholders viz. hotels, commercial establishments, group housing etc. for control at source.
