Establishment of Environmentally and Economically
Sustainable MSWM Systems
a) Field teams
As a part of the
efforts to improve MSW Management System, GTZ engaged the Centre for Environment
Education (CEE) which had stationed a field team at Ujjain for undertaking
awareness and education programmes and working on establishment of
environmentally and economically sustainable MSW Management systems.
b) Demonstration
Projects
The Project in
Ujjain is being executed by M/s Dronachary Shikshan Sansthan. The area covered
by the NGO is in the surroundings of Mahakal temple, Mahananda nagar, Subhas
nagar, Bank colony, Parwana nagar and Gudri (wards 32, 33, 39 & 53). Within
Mahananda nagar, the organization serves residents of all income groups,
including 190 EWS households. In March 2008, the Project was benefiting 2000
households and approximately 10,000 people. Employment has been provided to 15
workers of whom 5 are ragpickers and 3 are women. 34 Resident Welfare
Associations (RWAs) geared towards Solid waste management have been initiated in
the city.
Door-to-Door
collection of garbage results in a collection of 10 tons/day of garbage, of
which 2.5tons/day is segregated at the source itself by 500households. The
segregated waste is taken to the vermi compost unit established by the while the
dry waste is sold for approx. Rs. 500/day and distributed evenly amongst the
workers.
