Demonstration of

a)
Vermi composting
The NGO has
established a vermin compost shed of the size of 12ft.x50ft. on 12ft.x60ft of
rented land. The shed contains 10 beds with an average bed size of 9ftx3ftx3ft.
The facility is managed by 2 workers (both male) who have a dedicated rickshaw
for their work. The organization has to input 80kgs of segregated wet waste into
these pits for an output of 50kgs of vermi composted waste, once in 45 days.
This vermin-compost is packed in 1 and 20kg bags which are made of reused
plastic or cement bags and is then sold to farmers in the adjoining areas of the
city. The selling price for the compost is Rs.3/kg for 10kg packets sold to
farmers and Rs. 5/kg for retail.
The vermin composting facility for the organization is still
in a nascent stage and has been started in October 2007. The marketability of
the product in the area is still to be fully explored by the organization. This
activity provides employment to 2 people.
As a part of the
efforts to improve MSW Management System, GTZ engaged the Centre for Environment
Education (CEE) which had stationed a field team at Ujjain for undertaking
awareness and education programmes and working on establishment of
environmentally and economically sustainable MSW Management systems.
